Lately, I’ve seen marketers online saying “Lead gen’s are dead.”
If you haven’t seen this clickbait, count yourself lucky. If you have seen it, I want you to know I call B.S.
If you play into their clickbait, you very quickly realize that they’re talking about lead gen PDFs, and instead they are encouraging different kinds of opt-in offers like quizzes, video series, etc.
Honestly, I still call B.S.
We (and our clients) are seeing great success in growing our email lists AND client rosters with lead gen PDFs.
So what’s dead?
Well, anything that’s boring, not valuable, and doesn’t solve a small problem your client (or potential client) has. Why would someone give you their email in exchange for something lame?
Here are my basic tips as you create your lead generator:
- Pick a topic your customers WANT to know about. They might NEED something else, but give them what they WANT.
- Don’t be afraid of giving away too much. We want your audience to know you are an expert. Plus, just because you’ve given them the information doesn’t mean they want to do the work themselves.
- Write follow-up emails so your subscribers hear from you after they download your lead generator.
- Consider creating a lead generator that gives your audience a taste of what you’re selling (ex: the first module of your course).
- Include a call to action and link to your website so they can find you the moment they’re ready to start working with you.
- Give it a good title. This can make or break the number of downloads you get. One of our clients named their lead generator 5 Ways to Budget Better; we renamed it to 5 Ways to Save $100 Each Week. The second version saw more downloads! P.S. ChatGPT is a great way to find a good title!
Alright… we obviously would LOVE to help you make your lead generator, but we’re also confident you can create your own. (Buttttt, let’s talk if you want some help.)
If you’re ready to tackle your new lead generator, here are some ideas for formats:
- A checklist
- A mini-course
- The first module of your course
- A quiz
- A PDF guide
- An E-book
- A self-assessment
- An implementation tool
- A discount code
- An email series
- A video lesson
There are SO many options. The only thing that truly matters is that you make it valuable to your potential customers. If you don’t, you’ll waste time creating it and might have to start over.
Between our tips and these formatting options, I know you can create something to grow your list with people who want and need what you’re offering.
