Hey friends,
It’s time to have a heart-to-heart about social media. I have talked to WAY too many people walking around with preconceptions about social media. And by “preconceptions,” I mean lies.
So I’m here to, lovingly, clear some of these up for you…
Lie: Going viral is the only way to succeed on social media.
Truth: Going viral actually can hurt you. We’ve heard countless stories of people whose virality attracted thousands of followers, but not the right followers. The increase in followers created momentary success but affected their account’s reach in the long run.
Lie: I have to do it myself in order for it to sound like me.
Truth: A good social media manager can help create a personality for your social media. We all know that you can’t do everything yourself. Frankly, even if you have the “know-how” that doesn’t mean you have the time or that you’ll make it a priority.
Lie: Social media will give me instant results.
Truth: You might read that one and say, “I don’t really believe that,” but if you’ve ever asked your social media person what the ROI for your social efforts will be, you have been believing this lie. Hear me out… your social media should have an ROI, but it won’t right away, and you may only see it show up in your overall ROI since social media is often more related to brand awareness than direct sales.
Lie: I have to do reels to be successful on social media.
Truth: I’m happy to report that this is false. Reels are a great strategy, and if your measure of success is the number of followers you have, reels may be the key to your success. But if you’re measuring success by nurturing and selling, carousels and static posts will do that for you, too!
Lie: I have to do everything (stories, posts, reels) on social; otherwise, it’s not a marketing strategy worth my time.
Truth: This all-or-nothing mentality won’t serve you well when it comes to social media. Sure, consistently showing up on social media can be a huge asset to your overall marketing strategy, but you don’t have to do everything. Just do something consistently. Why? Because millennials and Gen Z use social media as a search engine so you’ll want to have some sort of presence on the apps!
Lie: I have to be on all the platforms.
Truth: Again… nope. Figure out where your audience is and hang out there. My friend Annie Schiffman recommends being on two platforms that aren’t owned by the same company. (In other words, Facebook, Instagram, and Threads count as the same platform since they’re all owned by Meta.)
Hopefully, these truths help clear up some of the lies floating around the internet. Wondering about some of the other things you’ve heard? Send us an email and we’ll give you our take on it!
